Driftkikker / drift-kik-ker (de (m.)) - (Dutch) - literally: an impetuous frog -
metaphorically: someone impulsive, hot tempered and emotional.
Founded by audio/visual artist Davor Dedic in March 2005, Dutch collective
Driftkikker mix and match influences from urban, ambient, trip hop, latin, funk, jazz
and rock into pure, unadulterated nu jazz with a hint of pop. ‘My dad’s record
collection featured something like 4.000 LPs and I remember being absolutely
mesmerised by an old Blue Note compilation featuring Coltrane, Miles Davis,
Thelonius Monk and others.’
Ever since, Dedic has played in several teenage bands, co-founded his own art
gallery, started an interactive avant-garde performance project and played at The
Hague’s North Sea Jazz Festival and Tobacco Road in Miami (USA), among others.
Not bad for a boy who was once ‘turned down by a music school because they
claimed I had no talent.’
Now, as Driftkikker, he has assembled a few like-minded friends to fuse
contemporary sounds with his love of jazz. Following on from their debut single ‘Your
expression’, released just four months after the project’s inception, ‘What’ is a
refreshing piece of upbeat jazzy textures crossed with modern electronics.
And yet, Dedic reveals, there is a lot more to their music than talent, tenacity and
inspiration: ‘It takes plenty of discipline - it’s a job like any other, really, the only
difference are the working hours!’
